If a body undergoes a triaxial loading, there will be strain energy stored on that body because of the strain effect. According to Haigh’s principle, if this stored strain energy is higher than the strain energy that is stored at the stress levels around the tensile limit, failure occurs.
Consider that a body undergoes triaxial stresses. In this case, the stored strain energy equation will be like this;
In this equation, ‘σx’, ‘σy’ and σz’ are the triaxial stresses acting on the stress element. ‘v’ is the Poisson’s ratio and the ‘σyp’ is the stress value that where the maximum strain occurs.
