Adding Tolerances To Dimensions In AutoCAD(Illustrated Expression)

Maybe tolerances are one of the most important parts of technical drawing. In Autocad, you can give tolerance values into your dimensions. In here, we will explain how to give tolerance values in Autocad dimensions and how to adjust options of them.

How To Give Tolerances To Dimensions In AutoCAD?

Click on ‘Manage Dimension Styles…’ in Autocad.

To open the options for dimensions in Autocad, click on ‘Annotation’ then click on line standard which is ‘ISO-25’ above, then click on ‘Manage Dimesion Styles…’ as shown by green arrow above.

After clicking on ‘Manage Dimension Styles’ in Autocad, window like above will be opened. You can see the all the dimension style in the list that is shown in red box. Also you can do adjustments on these dimension styles with option in green box above in Autocad.

Download and install Autocad 2019

If you click on ‘New’, button you can create your own dimension style in Autocad and, if you click on ‘Modify…’ button, you can edit the selected dimension style from list.

Adjusting tolerances in Autocad.

After clicking on ‘Modify…’ button, click on ‘Tolerances’ section as shown by green box abov from appeared window. As you see above, you can adjust the format of tolerances as shown by green arrow;

  • Symmetrical: This is generally used tolerance style in most technical drawings. You can not give different value for upper and lower tolerances.
  • Deviation: The upper and lower tolerances as shown in separate values. You can give different upper and lower tolerance values.
  • Limits: If you select this one, upper and lower limit value of dimensions separately shown. Not tolerance values itselves.

From precision section, you can adjust the digit number after comma up to 8 decimal numbers as shown by red arrow above.

Symmetrical tolerances in Autocad.

You can enter upper and lower values of your tolerance from shown blue box. You can directly enter your tolerance values.


‘Scaling For Height’ option adjusts the height of tolerance number in dimensions with scale factor according to height of primary dimensions.

You can adjust the placement of tolerance and zero suppression of your tolerance values as shown in orange box. For example your tolerance dimension is 0.005, if you select ‘Leading’ option, this value will be suppressed as .005. If you select the ‘Trailing’ option, 0.05000 will be suppressed as 0.05.

Like alternate units for primary dimensions, you can also adjust alternate tolerance units as shown in red box above.
