Equivalent Stress Solution In ANSYS® Structural Analyses

In different structural analyses in ANSYS® Mechanical, you can obtain equivalent stress occurrence for your physical and FEA models. Here, we explain how to see the equivalent stress in your model and what is the equivalent(Von-Mises) stress actually. 


What Is Equivalent(Von-Mises) Stress In Mechanics?

First of all, you need to know that the von-mises stress theory is used for mostly ductile materials. And this theory gives one-directional total stress states of the physical models. For equivalent von-mises stress, the equation is; 

As you see in the equation above, there are three stress elements are used to obtain equivalent stress. These stresses are the principal stresses that are calculated. Equivalent stress is obtained with these principal stresses. 

How To Assign Equivalent Stress In ANSYS®?

If you built all the boundary conditions and mesh structure in ANSYS® structural analysis, you can see the equivalent stress which is also called as Von-Mises stress results. 

Click on the ‘Equivalent(Von-Mises)’ option.

To see the equivalent stress result in ANSYS® Mechanical, right-click on the ‘Solution’ tab then hover your mouse on the ‘Insert’. From the ‘Stress’ tab, select the ‘Equivalent(Von-Mises)’ selection.

Click on the ‘Solve’ button.

After selecting this option, click on the ‘Solve’ button as shown above.

The equivalent stress result is shown as above. You can use probes and different contour showing options to see the von-Mises stress. 


So the logic of equivalent stress and the seeing equivalent stress in ANSYS® is very simple like this.
