Basic Explanation Of Steelmaking In Electric Arc Furnaces
Steel is produced in various ways and the general technologies to produce steel are explained in Mechanical Base. But the produced steels are serviced in various forms, such as ingots, billets, sheets etc. In this article, we will explain the steels that produced with continuous casting method.
Continous casting is the process that the service form of steels are produced with it. Instead of producing billets from molten steel, the steel parts are continously produced with continous casting method. Solidificating of ingot form of steels takes lots of time, instead of losing that time, the steel end products can be manufactured continously.

As you see above illustration, there is a ladle that the produced molten steel is inside of it. Molten steel is poured into the the ‘Tundish’ to create mold flux to the mold. There is a water cooled mold that provides the lower the temperature of poured steel. After this mold, the solidification of poured steel starts at the cooling chamber as shown above. The semi-solidified steel is transmitted with guide rools. Water spray is applied in the cooling chamber to speed-up the solidification of steel.
As you see above, a continous slab is obtained with the bunch of bending and withdrawal rolls. At th een of the rool-way, there are special rools to straighten the slab. After this straightening rolls, continous slabs are cut with cutoff torch to obtain discrete slab parts from steel. These slabs are used in various manufacturing sites to produce various parts and products.
